  Building A crate:

We would strongly recommend that you build a shipping crate to send your boards in, following these instructions:

Carefully measure the length of your boards at the longest point.

Measure the boards at the widest point.

Lets assume you get the following measurements as an example.

Length 60"   Width  12"

The inside dimensions of your crate should be about 4" longer and 4" wider than your measurements to give you room for packing material.

We would recommend that you make the sides and ends of your crate out of 1" x 6"  ( actual size) 3/4" x5 1/2") spruce lumber.

This would give you a total outside circumference measurement of: 64 + 64 + 18 + 18 + 6 + 6 = 176"

The maximum allowable by UPS is: 194"

Maximum weight: 150 lbs.

NOTE: If your measurement exceeds
this amount give Pat a call at: (403) 335-8644 before building your crate. Otherwise proceed as follows:

Making the crate:

Cut the side pieces 64" long, and the end pieces 16" long.

Fasten the end pieces inside the sides with 1 1/2" drywall screws.

IMPORTANT

Make a reinforcing end cap over each end using 1/4" plywood, and fasten it to the end of the side pieces with drywall screws.  Otherwise if the boards slide endwise in shipment the end of the box will split.

Drill two 1/2" holes about 8" apart at the center of each end cap.  Place a piece of 3/8" rope through the holes and knot the ends inside the crate.  This gives the UPS driver something to lift the crate with.

Fasten a piece of 1/4" plywood to the bottom of the crate with 1" drywall screws.

Make a 1/4" thick plywood cover for the top of the crate.  Cut an 8" x 8" square hole in it near the center.  This gives the custom's officials easy access to see inside the crate.

You now have a very strong lightweight shipping crate to send your boards to us, and for us to return your boards to you without
damage.

To make good economical packing material do as follows:

IMPORTANT

Fill several plastic grocery bags with 3 sheets of crumpled up newspaper, then tie a knot in the end of the bags to keep the paper inside.

This method of packing is by far the least expensive and the best.  If the boards slide back and forth in the box they can break open the box ends.

Packing Instructions:

Place a layer of bags in the bottom of the crate.

Place a board in the crate face up.

Place a layer of bags on top of the board.

Place the second board in the crate face down.

Place a layer of bags above the top board.

Stuff bags on both ends and both sides of the boards.

Install the top cover to the crate using 1" drywall screws.

Reason for export: Temporary importation to Canada for non-warranty repair (only).

Sold To:

These antique auto parts are NOT sold, but are to be returned to shipper upon repair.

Description Of Goods

To keep importation fees to a bare minimum please value the boards at about $10 US, and DO NOT insure them with UPS.

If you insure them Customs tends to want to value the boards at the insurance value, not the true value that you stated.

Pat has found that in receiving and shipping over 500 sets of boards by UPS. none were ever lost.

If shipments are valued over $19.99 Canadian they will be subject to needless brokerage fees and taxes.

It is VITAL that you mention the fact that your reason for shipping your boards to Canada is for repair purposes only.  It is also vital that you emphasis the poor condition of the boards, as illustrated below. Thirdly please value to boards at about $10 USD.

Use the following phrase to describe your boards.  Replace the year and make of vehicle with your own, and if need be change the wording to better describe the poor condition of your boards and rubber matting.

These 1933 Dodge warped rusty running boards with badly worn rubber matting, are valued at $11.00 USD.  They are a temporary Canadian import for (non warranty)repair purposes only. They are to be returned to the sender upon repair.  NAFT #9966 and GST #66 apply.

By following the above instructions you will eliminate duty, brokerage fees and taxes, and also ensure quick passage through Canadian customs
.

If you are not very specific about the reason for shipping to Canada, and do not tell them about the poor condition of the boards as outlined above Canadian Customs will likely question the reason for shipping, and their low stated value. This causes needless hassle, long delays, brokerage fees and taxes.

Our experience has been that if the paper work is filled in as we have indicated, the boards sale through customs very quickly and easily, but if not it often results in long delays, brokerage fees and taxes, as well as a real time consuming hassle to get the boards cleared through Customs.

NOTE:
